FWB yesterday announced that it is now shipping Hard Disk Toolkit 4.0, a major upgrade to its drive formatting and management utility. The new version features performance and reliability improvements, FireWire compatibility, Mac OS 9 compatibility, and interface enhancements. Additional features include support for the latest AGP G4s, Ultra-DMA 66 drives, Iomega ATAPI ZIP as well as more than 1000 other storage devices. Hard Disk Toolkit 4.0 carries a $200 price tag; upgrades are available to version 3.0 owners for $50.

Posts updates for 2008, 2004
On the heels of releasing security updates for previous versions of Office, Microsoft on its blog Tuesday said that the 2011 version of the Office for Mac suite will be 32-bit only. The focus of development has been on improving compatibility between Mac and Windows platforms, according to product unit manager Jake Hoelter, and so Office has not been completely transitioned over to Cocoa. Unless the entire suite is written in Cocoa, it cannot take advantage of 64-bit processing.

Agile Web Solutions has posted an update to 1Password, bringing the Mac utility up to v3.2. The software guards passwords, credit card numbers and other private information, allowing people to quickly insert it into websites without having to remember it personally or write it down on paper. The key upgrade in v3.2 is support for Safari 5, Apple's just-released web browser.

Nexus one gets 720p recording thanks to hack
A member of the XDA developers forum has created a hack that enables 720p video recording using the 5-megapixel camera on the Google Nexus One. A sample video reportedly taken with the modified handset is embedded below. The hack requires Cyanogen Mod CM5.0.8test3 to be installed on the host phone.

Public launch likely before end of June
Apple is seeding another developer build of Mac OS X 10.6.4, 10F566. Arriving a just a week after the last build, 10F564, the new one has grown only modestly in size to reach 613.8MB. Bugfixes continue to be concentrated in several key areas, namely iPhoto, Aperture and DVD Player, as well as input responsiveness, SMB file servers, VPN connections and Creative Suite 3 apps.

Google Maps Navigation out for Canada, Europe
Google on Wednesday said that Google Maps Navigation version 4.2 has now launched and brings support to more countries. The Internet-based navigation service is now available in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland. It needs Android 1.6 or newer.

MS says IE9 test faster than Safari 5 final
Microsoft tried to downplay the launch of Safari 5 by posting its own comparison video (below, Silverlight needed) showing Internet Explorer 9's performance with graphics hardware acceleration. Apple is touting use of the GPU for the Windows version of its browser, but IE9 even in its test phase is shown drawing demo sites noticeably faster than Safari. Microsoft didn't say how many of the tests, which exist on the IE9 preview site, were hardware-enabled for both.

Most corrected through WebKit upgrade
The Safari 5 and 4.1 for Tiger updates released yesterday together address at least 48 security vulnerabilities, according to Apple data. The large number of fixes is mostly attributable to work on WebKit, the rendering engine at the core of the browser. Some of the most critical issues remedied in this area include ones with HTML buttons and attribute manipulation, which could allow for hacking. A problem with keyboard focus could previously be used to trick people into triggering an unintended action, such as payment.

Google Maps will preview Gmail, Buzz addresses
Google is continuing to tie in its mobile services together, with a Monday update that previews maps of addresses sent through Gmail and Google Buzz. Before, users were forced to copy and paste addresses into Google Maps. Users need to enable Google Maps previews in mail in their Gmail settings, and will then receive a preview with a controllable map of that location.

Supports iOS 4, iBooks enhancements
Apple is very close to releasing the iTunes 9.2 update, say developers. A new seed is reportedly labeled a "Golden Master" copy, signifying that the software is essentially complete. The upgrade from beta is likely not coincidental, as Apple yesterday released a gold master of iOS 4 to developers.

New metallic case comes in Gold and Chrome styles
With the new iPhone 4 on the way iLuv has already introduced a new line of protective cases and screen guards, such as the Fusion, Emoticon, Dream, Nature, and Sentinel. The new Fusion case comes in two separate models, the iCC727 ad iCC728. Both versions are designed as a hard dual-lay protective case made of silicone and polycarbonate (PC), however, the iCC727 Fusion includes an integrated stand for horizontal viewing. On the other hand, while the iCC727 is only available in Black, the iCC728 comes in Black, Pink/White, Purple/Yellow, Green/Blue, and White colors.

Sync files via iTunes
Ecamm Network has launched PadSync, a new application that provides file-synchronizing between both a Mac and iPad. Programs such as Pages, GoodReader, Numbers, and Keynote can be used to share files with the Mac, and do so via the iTunes file sharing feature. The PadSync works by mirroring files on the iPad and sending them to any Mac connected through a USB cable. Features include drag-and-drop support for files, and automatic file-sharing capabilities.

New 64bit release offers watermark, output options
Adobe on Tuesday morning announced Photoshop Lightroom 3, an update to its digital photography workflow solution that allows photographers to quickly organize, enhance and showcase images. First released as a public beta in October 2009, the final version of Lightroom 3 introduces a completely redesigned performance-focused architecture that better handles growing image libraries and provides a more powerful raw processing engine with noise reduction and sharpening tools. Now 64-bit capable, Lightroom 3 also includes new features that optimize workflows and allow images to be shared in creative ways, including support for DSLR video files and tethered shooting on select cameras.

Apple adds greater HTML5, extensions support
Apple in a low-key evening update unveiled Safari 5, its first major update to the browser in the year. The release, now available, is a major speed boost and runs JavaScript 30 percent faster than Safari 4; it's also about three percent faster than the just-finished Chrome 5.0. It also uses better caching and DNS prefetching to save more data and load pages faster.

Space trading, combat game ditches Cider
Chris Mayer, an independent developer, has announced the release of three complete Xcode projects designed for authors wanting to publish books for the iPhone and iPad. The projects -- Simple Book App for iPhone, Universal Simple Book App for iPhone and iPad, and Advanced Book App for iPhone -- are ready-made apps that only require content to be loaded in HTML format. Pages can be created in any HTML editor, and use a variety of fonts and styles, as well as images. The Advanced Book App includes several features not found in Simple, and is currently selling for $27 versus $9. The Universal project costs $18.

Gold master already headed to developers
In an unexpected turn, Apple has announced that it is renaming the iPhone OS. It will now simply be called iOS, reflecting its use on devices like the iPad. As previously revealed, the iOS 4 firmware brings several important changes including multitasking, app folders, a universal inbox and e-mail threading. Newly disclosed though is integration with the iPhone 4 retina display, and updated Camera and Photos apps.

Verizon adds V CAST Video to Android phones
As expected, Verizon Wireless on Monday made its V CAST Video service available on its lineup of Android smartphones. Programming includes entertainment, news and sports from over 40 providers. Users will have access to videos of college football, college basketball and NHL hockey, as well as 64 live streams of Spanish-language broadcasts of 2010 World Cup matches.

Adobe Flash 10, Acrobat 9 at risk
Adobe on Saturday posted a warning of a critical security vulnerability for both Flash and Acrobat. Both Mac and Windows versions of Flash 10.0 and earlier, as well as all versions of Acrobat 9, are susceptible to being exploited for remote control over a user's computer. Flash 10.1's pre-release build and older versions of Acrobat aren't affected.

Safari 5 would help Apple regain browser edge
A potentially significant rumor has Apple launching Safari 5 as soon as WWDC with new additions intended to beat Google. The browser would allegedly have an option for Bing alongside Google and Yahoo, reflecting a last-minute deal with Microsoft. Apple would also bolster its HTML5 advocacy by supporting many more features, including geolocation, draggable items and video with closed-captioning and full-screen modes.

Menus appear to be Mac-native
A YouTube video appears to show an unannounced version of Adobe Audition running on a Mac. Although a VMware icon can be seen on the OS X menu bar, the software does not appear to be running through virtualization software. As the user navigates through the interface, the menus show Mac-native design rather than the Windows layout.

Two firmware updates for Archos 5 tablet released
Two different versions of a firmware update have been launched for the Archos 5 Internet tablet. Version 1.9.10 brings OpenGL without 3D acceleration, while version 2.0.15 has 3D-accelerated OpenGL. The former brings with it a number of fixes, regarding fixing incorrect playback of Motion JPEG files as well as newfound support for M4B audio files.

Win 7 overtakes XP, Mac gets significant share
The launch of Steam on the Mac has seen the Mac surge to 8.9 percent of the audience in less than a month, Valve's May hardware survey said. The platform was only available from May 12 but has already overtaken Windows Vista 64-bit in share. Most of the Mac share was using a 64-bit version of Snow Leopard.

HTC rolls out Android 2.1 for GSM Heros today
The long-awaited and delayed Android 2.1 update for the GSM version of the Hero is finally being released today, HTC Taiwan announced. Whether the release is a global rollout that will include European Heros remains to be seen, however. HTC will send out a link to download the update to all owners of the Hero, but cautions that users should use Wi-Fi instead of 3G.

Chrome on all platforms gets Google video codec
Google on Friday began seeding the first developer versions of Chrome with WebM video built-in. The download lets the open codec work for HTML5 video on Linux, Macs and Windows PCs. Other changes include key bug fixes after coming out of sleep and, on Macs, the option of using the Tab key to cycle through only form fields or links.

Evo 4G OTA fix may hit rooting as well as SD bug
HTC's recently pushed over-the-air update to fix the Evo 4G's SD storage bug may also block the ability to get root control on the phone, cracking team Unrevoked warned today. The group didn't have complete confirmation but warned the update could likely prevent the root-access hack.

Apple HTML5 site ironically needs one browser
Apple overnight posted an HTML5 showcase page to make its case for the technology. The page includes a handful of examples showing how it can be used for advanced meda on the web, including media, typography and transitional effects. Its opening also takes a clear shot at Adobe's assertions that Flash is a standard, pointing out that a plugin by definition can't be a standard feature.

Beta test to begin with 3DS Max users
Developer e-on has released Personal Learning Editions of Vue 8.5 xStream and Infinite, its main environmental modeling suites. Infinite operates independently, while xStream connects to Maya, Lightwave, Cinema4D, Softimage or 3DS Max. The PLE editions are free, but are for non-commercial use only, and thus have network rendering disabled and watermarked output. Likewise, PLE users cannot exchange files with other people or editions of Vue.

TIME updates mobile app to v2.0
An updated version of the TIME Mobile application for the iPhone and iPod touch has been released in the App Store. The free app allows users to access all of the latest news in a format designed for reading on a mobile device. Version 2.0 features a newly designed interface that gives users the ability to customize which sections show on their homepage and how many articles are displayed for each section. The applications video library has also been optimized along with the inclusion of support for listening to podcasts. Other changes to the application include: shake to refresh, article sharing via Twitter and Facebook, customizable fonts, and more.

Insider Software has released a series of FontAgent Pro plug-ins for Adobe's Creative Suite 5 suite of applications. The new plug-ins automatically activate fonts used in documents as they are opened in CS5 programs such as InDesign, Illustrator, or Photoshop.

Google mobile app results now for Android, iPhone
Google this week modified its mobile search engine to now include search results of apps from the Android Market and the iPhone App Store. Above the regular search results, direct links to the app on both online app stores will appear. The search also includes basic app details such as its price, rating and publisher.

MS claims Win Live Essentials trump iPhoto
Microsoft today tried to claim a rare edge in superiority for media apps with a preview of an upgraded Windows Live Essentials pack. The bundle focuses heavily on Photo Gallery and claims some advantages not seen in iPhoto: users can make composite images that take the best parts of similar images, and Facebook integration is tight with both uploads and the ability to import tags from photos already uploaded to the social network. Batch edits and an Office-like ribbon interface are also new.

War-based strategy game coming to Mac
Virtual Programming has announced that the previously released Supreme Commander 2 for Xbox 360 and PC, is now making its way to the Mac platform. The new war-based strategy-game takes place 25 years after the original, when the delicate peace between the United Earth Federation, the Aeon Illuminate, and the Cybran Nation has been shattered.
The game consists of a single-player campaign which spans over 18 different missions, as well multiplayer support for battling against other players.

Popular MMORPG contains session-based battles
Riot Games in collaboration with TransGaming have announced a new Mac version of the online multiplayer strategy game League of Legends. As opposed to some MMORPGs this game focuses less on a world-based storyline and more on the individual champions and their back-stories, such as Pantheon The Artisan of War and Gragas The Rabbler Rouser. Within the game are up to 51 different champions, each with their own health, mana, and attack stats, as well as usable abilities.

Two DJs announce iPad performances

Hulu coming to Xbox Live as paid service?
A reliable source told GearLive that Microsoft will announce it will bring the first paid Hulu service to its Xbox Live service for the Xbox 360. The announcement is expected to come at the E3 show in two weeks, with Microsoft holding a press conference on the 14th. Like the currently available Netflix service, Hulu would be on the Xbox 360 dashboard and would require a subscription fee.

KavaSoft has announced HyperImage 3.0, a update of its app for downloading web photo galleries. The software includes a built-in image browser, used to both manage and view downloaded files. The v3.0 upgrade incorporates a new image search feature, allowing users to set a minimum image size, as well as find clip art, line drawings, or people's faces. Search criteria can also be based on color, and deliberately omit adult content.

Final release likely close by
Apple has reportedly begun seeding a sixth beta of Mac OS X 10.6.4 to developers, build 10F564. At 600MB, the package is approximately 20MB larger than the previous release, build 10F58. The focus of testing remains virtually unchanged, as developers are being asked to once more look at graphics drivers, SMB, USB, VoiceOver and VPN connectivity.
