FWB Hard Disk Toolkit 4.0's

FWB yesterday announced that it is now shipping Hard Disk Toolkit 4.0, a major upgrade to its drive formatting and management utility. The new version features performance and reliability improvements, FireWire compatibility, Mac OS 9 compatibility, and interface enhancements. Additional features include support for the latest AGP G4s, Ultra-DMA 66 drives, Iomega ATAPI ZIP as well as more than 1000 other storage devices. Hard Disk Toolkit 4.0 carries a $200 price tag; upgrades are available to version 3.0 owners for $50.

Apple gets highest score ever in satisfaction, holds off PC

Apple today managed to get its best-ever score on the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) and maintain its lead over Windows PCs. Happiness with Macs climbed from 84 points last year to an all-time high of 86 this year. It has a nine-point lead over the maximum 77 point score for Windows PCs, the largest gap of any category in the ACSI.

Jays intros a-JAYS Four iPhone headphones

Swedish headphone maker Jays is already introducing a new product for the just-announced iPhone 4. The a-JAYS Four iPhone is based on the company's existing a-JAYS line-up, and the a-JAYS Three specifically. It has three built-in buttons with a grip placed inline with the cord. The remote will adjust volume, answer and end calls, navigate through audio tracks and record voice memos.

Evizone debuts server communications service for Mac users

Evizone has launched a new self-titled communications service, designed to enable private e-mail conversations between individuals or workgroups. Evizone provides its own encryption key, which guards messages and documents stored on the company’s server. Users are prohibited from copying, forwarding, printing, or saving content which has passed through the server, making it so that the only available copy of any info is kept on Evizone.

Microsoft says Office for Mac 2011 will be 32-bit only

On the heels of releasing security updates for previous versions of Office, Microsoft on its blog Tuesday said that the 2011 version of the Office for Mac suite will be 32-bit only. The focus of development has been on improving compatibility between Mac and Windows platforms, according to product unit manager Jake Hoelter, and so Office has not been completely transitioned over to Cocoa. Unless the entire suite is written in Cocoa, it cannot take advantage of 64-bit processing.

3M shows first USB 3.0-powered desktop display

3M at an event today showed the first example of a USB 3.0-based display. The 18.5-inch LCD is powered entirely by the bus, albeit over two ports, but should have much better refresh rates for video and other visually intensive tasks through the roughly 10 times larger, 5Gbps bandwidth versus USB 2.0's 480Mbps. The panel uses just 8W of power, or about half of what a similarly sized LCD would need.

Samsung shows new 3D, pico projectors in US

Samsung showed its upcoming A800 3D home projector and SP-H03 pico projector in the US for the first time. The 1080p A800 3D uses Samsung's Active 3D technology and can reproduce broadcast-standard colors. In spite of the added dimension, it's rated at 1,000 lumens of brightness and has a 10,000:1 contrast ratio.

1Password 3.2 updates for Safari 5

Agile Web Solutions has posted an update to 1Password, bringing the Mac utility up to v3.2. The software guards passwords, credit card numbers and other private information, allowing people to quickly insert it into websites without having to remember it personally or write it down on paper. The key upgrade in v3.2 is support for Safari 5, Apple's just-released web browser.

Apple is seeding another developer build of Mac OS X 10.6.4, 10F566. Arriving a just a week after the last build, 10F564, the new one has grown only modestly in size to reach 613.8MB. Bugfixes continue to be concentrated in several key areas, namely iPhoto, Aperture and DVD Player, as well as input responsiveness, SMB file servers, VPN connections and Creative Suite 3 apps.

Sony brings out Alpha A290, A390 entry DSLRs

Skype won't use FaceTime, still hints at iPhone 4 video chat

Skype today clarified its interest in iPhone 4 and the possibility of video chat. A spokesman said Skype was curious about FaceTime and wanted to "see how this process unfolds" but made clear that the company didn't have any near-term intention of using Apple's open video call standard for Skype chats. Its now confirmed earlier remarks were simply about getting the "best possible experience" for video calls on the iPhone app, the company told Electronista.

WD TV Live Plus HD media hub adds Netflix

Western Digital expanded its set-top hubs today with the WD TV Live Plus HD. The new addition primarily brings Netflix video streaming and, unlike some other interfaces, lets users add movies to the queue from the hub instead of going to a separate device's web browser. Internet access beyond Netflix is also important as users can check Flickr photos, watch YouTube and stream Live365 or Pandora radio.

Sprint "erred," Evo 4G launch sales much lower

Sprint in an update late Tuesday had to drastically scale back its claims of the Evo 4G breaking sales records. While it still had its strongest launch ever, the company said it "erred" and that sales were just equal to the combined sales of the Palm Pre and Samsung Instinct, not three times higher like it said on Monday. It didn't say how many of the Android phones actually sold, nor what had triggered the mistake.

Apple has scored a coup in mobile OS design as it was discovered today that key webOS interface designer Rich Dellinger left Palm in May to join Apple as a Senior UI Designer. The hire is best known for creating the unintrusive notification system in webOS. He was also instrumental to Palm's core Mojo app framework as he developed the CSS and HTML structure for webOS' namesake web apps.

Orb Live for iPad enables remote streaming

Apple's iPhone 4 Retina Display claims "exaggeration?"

Apple's claims behind the iPhone 4's Retina Display aren't completely true, display research veteran Raymond Soneira claimed today. While Apple claims that 300 pixels per inch (PPI) is the limit of the human retina and that the iPhone 4's 326PPI easily exceeds it, the DisplayMate president notes that the resolution would need to reach 477PPI for the pixels to truly be 'invisible' to a healthy human eye. Apple's claims don't become completely true until about 1.5 feet from the LCD.

AdMob: new iPhone ad rules hurt competition

AdMob founder Omar Hamoui today responded to Apple's updated iOS ad rules with a complaint that Apple was engaging in anti-competitive practices. The executive of the now Google-owned advertiser claimed that it could reduce the revenue for "tens of thousands" of app developers by limiting what AdMob could do for ads and would restrict app writers' choices for advertisers. He also inferred that it would hurt users by reducing the number of free or low-cost apps.

Analyst: CDMA iPhone production to start in Q3

Hulu for iPad, Xbox could be ready in two months
